Web Design
I am relatively new to web design. Of course in 7th grade I made a Geocities page in class, but I only began seriously designing Sophomore summer (July 2008). Since then, I have learned XHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP (including using mySQL as a backend), and am comfortable using Django, JQuery, and CodeIgniter, as well as Fireworks, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, phpMyAdmin, SFTP clients, and other widely-used software. I am familiar with the systems part of the process as well, and am comfortable installing and configuring Apache web servers, DNS servers, and mySQL databases. See the System Administration page for more details.
New Light Solutions
, New Light Solutions was my first web design client. Starting out I had a basic understanding of HTML, but no CSS knowledge whatsoever. I was hired by my father to make this site as one of my part time jobs over the summer (the other was SpireUSA), so I spent about a three hours a day for a month learning and creating. I consulted extensively with the client to determine his preferences for the site, using a background photo chosen by him, as well as prominently displaying the 'Uses' section on the side bar. The most interesting features of the site are curve between the sidebar and the top navigation bar and the background of the bar itself.
Colin Schimmelfing dot com
I created this site because I felt I needed a web presence, and wanted to be able to direct potential employers to a site which would display my talents more appealingly than a resume. The Javascript on the main page is a little more flashy than necessary, but I wish to show off my skills with JQuery and Javascript. The site was created using CodeIgniter, a PHP library which implements the Model-View-Controller system.
Spire USA
While working part time as the Shipping Manager at Spire USA (a laptop bag merchant whose products I would absolutely recommend) during the summer of 2008, I mentioned to the owner that I was learning web design. Long story short, I ended up maintaining parts of the website with DreamWeaver, upgrading the mySQL merchandise database information, and assissting with an impending transition to a PHP interface to the backend which would replace the ColdFusion interface. This was in addition to performing my duties as the Shipping Manager.
Wordpress experience
During my time at SCCS, I interacted quite a bit with Wordpress. The organization has a regular Wordpress install for it's main site, a Wordpress Multi-User (WPMU) install with around 25 college organization and student blogs, and multiple regular Wordpress installs in users' home directories. I have experience installing and upgrading both types, experience with installing plugins, and experience with editing and installing themes.
